A Place of Our Own is an ongoing photo series documenting queer families in the South. Through editorial portraiture and storytelling, the project celebrates love, resilience, and domestic life while exploring how queerness and Southern identity coexist.
I’m currently inviting queer families and households across the South to take part. Participation means opening your home and story to be photographed, and sharing a short Q&A about your family’s rituals, values, and everyday life. My goal is to celebrate how queer families live, love, and exist in their everyday spaces, whether quiet, chaotic, playful, or beautifully mundane.
HOW IT WORKS
Apply: Tell me about your family, your home, and the everyday life you share. Applying begins a conversation—it does not commit you to participating or guarantee a session.
We Chat: If the project feels like a possible fit, we’ll have a relaxed conversation about your story, comfort levels, privacy, access needs, and what you would—or would not—like photographed and shared.
Plan the visit: I’m based in Charleston and travel throughout the South to photograph participating families in their own homes. Together, we’ll choose a date and talk through the rooms, routines, relationships, and small moments that feel meaningful to you.
The session: The session is collaborative and unhurried. We’ll create a mix of intentional portraits and natural photographs of life as it actually feels in your space. Consent remains an ongoing conversation throughout the visit.
Share: Along with the photographs, I’ll invite you to answer a short set of questions about your family, values, rituals, home, and experience of queer life in the South. You can skip questions and help decide which personal details feel right to share.
WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE APPLYING
I come you: Sessions take place in participating families’ *homes* throughout the South. Applying also helps me plan future travel.
Your home can look lived-in: There is no need to redecorate, hide clutter, or make your home look perfect. The project is about real domestic life.
Consent is ongoing: You can set boundaries, leave rooms or subjects private, skip questions, pause, or stop at any point—no explanation required.
Applying is not a commitment: We only schedule after talking, confirming that the project feels right for everyone, and putting the details in writing.
